浇雪孤灯，放鹤天涯。

As the snow melts, a lantern sits alone, and a crane is set free
to travel to the world’s ends.
----------- ✿ Translation notes ✿ ------------
[1] Jiangnan: Geographically, Jiangnan refers to the water
bodies and lands immediately to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze
River. Historically and culturally, these places were the meeting points,
transport centres and dwelling spots of the Jianghu wanderers.
[2] Shu: Refers to a historical commandery/area in ancient
China, established in the area around present-day Chengdu, Sichuan Province ,
from the Qin to the Tang dynasties.
[3] five lakes and three rivers: In general, it can be used
to refer to rivers and lakes metonymically. It originates from the three large
rivers and five large lakes from which the idea of the Jianghu was born. The
five lakes are commonly thought to be Lake Tai in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, Hongze
Lake in Jiangsu, Lake Chao in Anhui, Poyang Lake in Jiangxi, and Dongting Lake
in Hunan, while the three rivers are thought to be the three lakes that the
Yangtze River split into: Jing River, Song River and Zhe River.
[4] Throwing away our mortal names: The original phrase used
here is 俗名共扬 (lit.
‘common name’, ‘together’ and ‘raise’), but 俗名 doesn’t only mean common name (a
term used in biology), it also refers to the birth name of monk who lived as a
human before they denounced the mortal realm. I inferred from the fact that the
previous line talked about tossing away wine, and came up with this
interpretation, but please let me know if it’s erroneous, thanks…
[5] We sit our silver-saddled horses on the green grass: Not
sure about this translation at all, but the original phrase just means “silver
saddles collapse green” (from 银鞍倒青 ), which did not make any sense (to me) at all...D: So I
tried to use the song’s context (watching the flowers beside the river) to
guess that silver saddles metonymically refer to the horses themselves, “collapse”
refers to allowing the horses to lie down and rest, and “green”…haha, the word 青 actually
means blue-green, which is different from grass-green, but I really ran out of
any other possible interpretation other than “grass” given the context, sorry.
Please let me know if this is wrong!
[6] “Which of these branches do you fancy the most?”: Not really an explanation about the song, but about the story – in Chapter 8, when Tan Jing and his wife first appear at the party for ‘Song Heng’, Tan Jing asks his wife, "Would you like this flower? Or this one?" This scene is one of the really heartwarming but heartbreaking ones in the entire novel, and I wonder if this is a reference to it, or perhaps, a parallel HE situation enacted by ChuSu…my heart🥹💮🌸
