Bestow On Me
mǎn chéng sheng gē céng jīng dǐng fèi guò rén hǎi
There was a time when the city filled with song, the festive
sounds floating across the masses
huā zhī yǔ jiàn bèi gong fèng yú gāo tái
With a stalk of flower and a sword presented as offerings for the godly
pedestal high above.
ruò cóng wàn rén zhī shàng dié luò zhì chén āi
Having fallen from above the masses to dust and ground below
shéi hái huì qián chéng mó bài
Who would remain a pious devotee
of yours?
jì yè huāng hún zì mò lù kuǎn
kuǎn ér lái
On lonely nights, wild spirits of all sorts approach from foreign
roads
wān dāo yǔ dié qīng wěn guò zuì qī yàn cán hái
Amongst which, a scimitar and a butterfly gently kiss the most
wretched of wreckages
ruò zài yī shùn guāng yīn bèi wēn róu yǐ
dài
Having been greeted with gentleness in a moment's time
shéi huì zhí dé fù tang dǎo huǒ xiāng ài
Who will be worth suffering
hell and high water in order to love?
cì yǔ wǒ zhū miè shén mó suǒ xiàng pī mí de jié jú
Bestow on me the honour to annihilate the gods and the demons, to
head towards an invincible fate
zài zhǎn zhuǎn
duō qíng rén jiān yī chéng yī chéng xiāng yù
Only to return to the cycles of this passionate world, meeting
again every journey
cì yǔ wǒ jué jìng féng shēng shàng tiān rù dì bǎi wú jìn jì hái yǒu zhè xīn jīng dòng yáo de yǒng
qì
Bestow on me the courage for my heart to remain impassioned even
amidst rebirth from the ultimate state, even while entering heaven and hell
without a single shred of fear
yī lì yān yǔ diān pèi zài lún huí zhī wài
A priest with a bamboo-woven hat[1] wanders amongst fog and rain, stranded outside the cycle of
reincarnation
yī bǐng zhǐ
sǎn jiàn zhèng guò zuì fěi cè huā kāi
A paper umbrella witnesses the most destitute of flowers
blooming
shì jiān fēng guāng bǎi dài huò bǎi guǐ qí āi
Be it the beauty of worldly sceneries lasting hundreds of
generations, or hundreds of ghosts mourning in unison
shéi dōu bù kěn zuì sheng mèng sǐ
wàng huái
No one is willing to forget and
forgive, even when drunken in life and dreaming in death
cì yǔ wǒ zhū miè shén mó suǒ xiàng pī mí de jié jú
Bestow on me the honour to annihilate the gods and the demons, to

Bestow on me the ability to never forget the impurities
accumulated from sins of the past, to never regret anything of this life
jiù lián zhè zhū tiān shén míng dōu bù bì zài qǔ yuè
And even the gods will never have to be appeased again.
shàng yuán yè guò cháng jiē sān qiān huá dēng míng miè
On the night before the Shangyuan Festival[3],
we cross the long streets, where there are three thousand Chinese lanterns
being set alight, only to have their fires extinguished
fang fú rén jiān tiān shàng cóng wèi jué bié
It's akin to how earth and heaven never truly bid farewell for
good[4].
~~
[1] The original was just "a bamboo-woven hat', which I suspect is a metonymic reference to Xie Lian (i.e., referring to him only by his hat). For clarity, I've placed the reference in the translation in a more explicated way.
[2] 前尘, literally meaning "previous dust" – a Buddhist word referring to sins accumulated from the previous life. I tried to retain the metaphor here, so I chose to use 'impurities'.
[3] Also known as the Lantern Festival, typically celebrated by setting lanterns alight on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar Chinese calendar.
[4] Another interpretation of this could be "It's akin to how we never truly bid farewell for good, be it on heaven or on earth", but I chose to continue the Buddhist/Taoist rebirth motif of souls that was mentioned earlier in the song (轮回 lunhui; cycle of birth and rebirth), so this means "never truly bidding farewell for good due to reincarnation". However, I also kept this because of the possibility of the second interpretation "heaven" being metonymic/representative of Xie Lian, and "hell" being metonymic/representative of Hua Cheng…just an attempt at killing two birds with one stone (^_^;)
